Lindo Channel Recharge Feasibility

Aims to conduct feasibility and initial design for enhancing natural recharge along Lindo Channel using Big Chico Creek’s excess flows to bolster groundwater for domestic wells and ecosystems through the Chico area, supplemented by monitoring groundwater conditions to assess impacts.

Total Project Budget: $330,000 

Project Outcomes 

  • Feasibility of Surface Water Recharge: The study aims to determine the feasibility of using the Lindo Channel for surface water recharge. This includes evaluating water diversion thresholds, assessing the potential recharge yield, and identifying infrastructure or stream improvements that may be required. 
  • Pilot Project Design: A pilot project will be designed to ensure that water can be diverted and absorbed effectively. This involves testing percolation rates and developing a project implementation plan. 
  • Environmental and Regulatory Assessments: The study includes assessments of environmental impacts and regulatory permitting needs to ensure the project complies with state and federal laws. 
  • Monitoring and Data Collection: The project will install monitoring equipment, such as wells and stream gauges, to track water absorption rates and project impacts. This will provide valuable data for future groundwater management efforts. 
  • Stakeholder and Public Engagement: The study emphasizes public outreach, with meetings and consultations with local residents, government agencies, and other stakeholders to gather input and inform the community about the project.

Updates on All Tasks/Accomplishments during 4/1/24 – 9/30/24: 

  • Project is within budget 
  • Progress on tasks include:  
    • Completed hydrologic analysis; compelted initial environmental flows analysis.  
    • Examined different models for environmental, hydrology, and natural flows;  
      • The purpose of this modeling is to estimate the discharge that sends water down the Lindo Channel in the existing condition.  
    • Reviewed AEM data and geological well logs for assessment of groundwater recharge potential;
