Lindo Channel Recharge Feasibility

Icon depicting water conservation in agriculture with two trees, water, and soil layers.

Aims to conduct feasibility and initial design for enhancing natural recharge along Lindo Channel using Big Chico Creek’s excess flows to bolster groundwater for domestic wells and ecosystems through the Chico area, supplemented by monitoring groundwater conditions to assess impacts.

Consultant: Geosyntec/West Yost

Project Partner: City of Chico

Total Project Budget: $330,000

Project Outcomes

  • Feasibility of Surface Water Recharge: The study aims to determine the feasibility of using the Lindo Channel for surface water recharge. This includes evaluating water diversion thresholds, assessing the potential recharge yield, and identifying infrastructure or stream improvements that may be required.
  • Pilot Project Design: A pilot project will be designed to ensure that water can be diverted and absorbed effectively. This involves testing percolation rates and developing a project implementation plan.
  • Environmental and Regulatory Assessments: The study includes assessments of environmental impacts and regulatory permitting needs to ensure the project complies with state and federal laws.
  • Monitoring and Data Collection: The project will install monitoring equipment, such as wells and stream gauges, to track water absorption rates and project impacts. This will provide valuable data for future groundwater management efforts.
  • Stakeholder and Public Engagement: The study emphasizes public outreach, with meetings and consultations with local residents, government agencies, and other stakeholders to gather input and inform the community about the project.

Project Progress

Key Accomplishments

  • Stakeholder Engagement
    • On October 23, 2024, the Vina Stakeholder Advisory Committee (SHAC) received an update on the Lindo Channel Recharge Feasibility Study.
    • During the meeting, both the SHAC and the public provided feedback, requesting more detailed information on how the monitoring locations were selected.
  • Public Engagement
    • The first public engagement meeting was held on November 13, 2024.
    • The consultant team shared their research findings to date and received valuable questions and comments from attendees.
